Bornplatz Synagogue Competition Won – A Place of Calm and Encounter

2025-10-23

The team of Schulz und Schulz, Haberland Architects, and POLA Landscape Architects has won the
competition for Hamburg’s Bornplatz Synagogue. The design combines architectural clarity with
sensitivity to the site’s history and significance.

POLA’s open-space design creates a unique atmosphere with two public squares and surrounding gardens that open the site to the city while offering retreat and calm.

“We wanted the space to be functional, but also convey both protection and openness,” says POLA. “A place that honors life today — and makes memory tangible.”

The new synagogue restores a central place of Jewish life in Hamburg, showing how architecture and landscape can unite history, spirituality, and urban life in a contemporary form.
