By the school year 2026/2027, the new building of the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium should be ready for occupancy according to the plans of AFF Architekten and POLA Landscape Architects. In the Berlin district of Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg, the new school will soon be built as a staggered building with the use of roof areas as a green classroom. The building will be accessible from Lange Straße via a small forecourt with play, sports and recreation facilities.

The architectural competition for the new grammar school was launched in summer 2021 with 18 planning teams. The five finalists were chosen in February 2022. According to the client, the Berlin housing association Howoge, the school community was involved in the planning from the very beginning. "In workshops lasting several days, we worked with everyone involved to develop the school's profile and the spatial program to match," says Jens Wadle, head of school construction at Howoge. "The results ultimately formed the basis for the planning competition."
