Deckeldinner

"Finally a lid on it" were the headlines after the opening of Dorothea Buck Park in autumn 2022, our latest project in Hamburg. A roof without noise, that's what the people in Hamburg's Schnelsen district on the right and left of the open motorway ditch have long wanted. Where once the traffic noise pushed along in the open air, today a vegetative biodiversity thrives. Residents meet, neighbourhood children play football in safety, and the first allotment gardeners are already growing fruit and vegetables.

Following on from this, we organised a big picnic or ‚DECKELDINNER‘, as part of Hamburg Summer of Architecture 2023. We invited the community to take a seat at the 50m-long table on the 400m-long esplanade of the Dorothea Buck Park. True to the motto "Bring Your Own Food and Share", numerous people from Schnelsen, future allotment gardeners, local associations and interested people from other parts of Hamburg responded to our call and brought home-baked cakes, sandwiches, salads and hearty finger food. In a relaxed atmosphere and in the best Hamburg weather, we ate together, exchanged ideas and celebrated the park. It has really become what it was intended to be: an open space to strengthen social interaction. A park whose neighbors were separated by a motorway for decades, that now brings people in the Schnelsen district together at last.

We would like to thank all the helping hands, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg —especially the Eimsbüttel District Office, and of course all the visitors of the DECKELDINNERS who made this unique event possible with us.
