Together with our colleagues from Stadt Land Fluss Städtebau, we were awarded a second prize in the competition for the redesign of Rhede’s town centre.
Between St. Gudula Church and the market square in front of the town hall, residents and visitors come together. It is a place for meeting friends for a drink in the evening, visiting the weekly market, and celebrating the Rhede fair together with people from the surrounding region. We conceive the space between church and town hall as the central urban stage of Rhede, understanding these two institutions as complementary poles from which the town derives its identity and projects it into its neighbourhoods and the wider region.
Complementing this urban axis, Gildekamp becomes part of a new green corridor extending from the Bürgerpark through the town centre to the Rheder Bach. Lined with trees, Gildekamp serves as a welcoming gateway for visitors arriving by car, a climate-responsive open space, and a multifunctional area capable of accommodating larger events and activities.
